- Class Synopsis:
This is a full year course that focuses heavily on grade-level ELA standards with emphasis on making inferences, identifying textual evidence to support inferences, and critical thought. Students can expect to interact with multiple genres of fictional/ informational texts, as well as create comprehensive and organized written responses at increasing levels of rigor. Students will practice reading comprehension and writing proficiency daily.
- Class Grading Policy:
Final grades are an accumulation of homework, classwork, writing assignments, projects, and quizzes/tests. My class policy for the submission of late assignments varies on a case-by-case basis at teacher discretion, however, after the summative completion of a unit, no work for that unit will be accepted. In addition, all coursework due must be submitted by the conclusion of the marking period.
- Classroom Management Policy/ Behavior Expectations:
The teacher and all students will agree to be always respectful to each other, with an understanding that disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. As in most traditional ELA classes, discussions regarding current events etc. can become passionate, and the expectation is that student (and teacher) views are expressed without the diminution, belittling, or disrespect of alternate viewpoints.
Each student can expect to be considered with kindness, patience, and respect.
It is the responsibility of the teacher to provide an optimal classroom setting/learning environment. If necessary, the teacher will apply appropriate discipline to achieve this goal. Disciplinary measures in grade 8 ELA include lunch detention, written restitution, and should the drastic situation arise, disciplinary referral (DR).
