• Restorative at Home

Things you can do to continue Restorative Practice at home:

    1. Focus on ways to solve problems rather than use punishment or rewards.  These things are successful in the short term, but prove to all apart in the long term.

    2. If your child has broken a rule, help them focus on how they may have harmed others (family members, teachers, themselves, etc.) instead of focusing on the specific rule they broke.

    3. If your child does cause harm to another person, discuss how they can repair the harm or "make things right".

    4. If your child's behavior has caused change in a relationship, find unique ways to restore the relationship.

    5. Always emphasize that it is important for your child to take responsibility for the things they do.  This might be in the form of apologizing, paying for damages, or helping to restore the harm through service.

    6. Consequences for behaviors should always connect directly to what was done, and to the people who were harmed.  Ask the child what consequences they feel are appropriate for the harm done.
